Dortmund tighten top-three grip after win over Hoffenheim

In Berlin, Borussia Dortmund hosted Hoffenheim and ran the ball with precision, winning 2‑0 and tightening their grip on a top‑three spot in the Bundesliga.
The away side started brightly, staying tight and matching the German giants in intensity, but the first half ended almost in a stalemate with few real chances arising. Both teams pressed hard in midfield and fought tight in defense, keeping the attack from producing clear threats.

Dortmund opened the scoring just before the break. In a sharp move, Julian Brandt slipped into the box and finished from close range after a well‑timed overlap on the right created the space.

After the interval the home side imposed themselves, setting the tempo and choking Hoffenheim’s rhythm. Early in the second half Nico Schlotterbeck spotted a set‑piece and tipped the ball into the corner, doubling the advantage.

Hoffenheim tried to claw back, making a late attack that narrowly missed, but Dortmund’s back line stayed calm and pulled the game to a close without much trouble.

The result extended Dortmund’s strong home run and keeps them firmly in contention near the top of the table, while the visitors will have to regroup after being held down despite a spirited effort.

“We are of course satisfied because we won. We kept a clean sheet and allowed nothing tonight. We defended well and it was a deserved victory. Nothing spectacular, but an important home win for us,” said manager Niko Kovac.

Across the league in the 13th round, the northern derby between Werder Bremen and Hamburg returned for the first time since February 2018 and finished in dramatic fashion. Bremen opened the scoring, Hamburg answered with two goals, and a late equaliser from Justa Njinmah seemed to settle the game for Bremen. However, Yussuf Poulsen struck in the dying moments to hand Hamburg a 3‑2 victory.
