Cold wave alert in Rajasthan; temperatures drop below 10 degrees Celsius in several cities

Jaipur: A fresh chill has rolled across Rajasthan, hinting at an intense winter ahead. The India Meteorological Department has now declared a cold‑wave alert for Jhalawar, Sawai Madhopur, and Churu, starting this Wednesday. In the Shekhawati belt, forecasts say temperatures could fall further, dipping to as low as 4–5 °C between December 2 and 4. Nights are expected to drop by 3–4 °C in the coming days, producing biting cold in the north and east of the state. Currently, ten cities have recorded overnight lows below 10 °C, with Alwar at 8 °C, Pilani at 7.2 °C, Sikar 8.5 °C, Churu 7.4 °C, Sri Ganganagar 7.8 °C, Nagaur 8.8 °C, Fatehpur 6.5 °C, Dausa 9.4 °C, Lunkaransar 4.7 °C, and Jhunjhunu 9.3 °C (Pilani, meanwhile, logged 10.4 °C at one point). A new western disturbance is on the way, likely to trigger a sharp temperature drop across North India, including Rajasthan. Consequently, the IMD has issued a yellow alert for Sikar and Jhunjhunu on December 3 and 4, warning of further chilling conditions. Meteorologists anticipate the toll will increase after December 5, with markedly colder nights. Experts warn that this winter could be longer and harsher than usual, with sub‑average minima prevailing from December to February. The Rajasthan Weather Department has urged farmers, vulnerable groups, and residents to brace against the biting cold. Observers noted people bundled in winter gear to stave off the severe chill. Sunday saw several areas experience a night‑time dip of 1–3 °C. Tragically, last year many lives were lost across the country due to the harsh cold.
