Syed Modi International: Tanvi Sharma upsets Nozomi Okuhara; Hooda, Baruah move to next round

Lucknow, Nov 27 – In a day that left many spectators on the edge of their seats, 16‑year‑old Tanvi Sharma delivered a breakthrough win at the Syed Modi International 2025. The young Indian took on former World No. 1, Olympic medalist and world champion Nozomi Okuhara in a tight three‑game tussle and emerged victorious, winning 13‑21, 21‑16, 21‑19 in under an hour. This match proved to be the most significant result of Tanvi’s career to date and secured her a berth in the quarter‑finals.
The surprise didn’t end there. Isharani Baruah pulled off a strong upset by defeating the eighth‑seeded Ukrainian Polina Buhrova with a decisive 21‑15, 21‑8 scoreline. Unnati Hooda, the top seed in women’s singles, breezed through her opponent Tasnim Mir, taking 21‑15, 21‑10. In the same bracket, Rakshitha Sree fought her way past Devika Sihag, losing the first game 16‑21 but coming back to win 21‑19, 21‑17.
Men’s singles saw its share of shocks on Day 3 as well. Third‑seeded HS Prannoy was beaten by Manraj Singh, 21‑15, 21‑18. Sixth‑seeded Tharun Mannepalli fell to Mithun Manjunath, after a three‑game battle that ended 21‑16, 17‑21, 21‑7. The former champion Kidambi Srikanth, meanwhile, dispatched Saneeth Dayanand with a comfortable 21‑6, 21‑16 victory.
In doubles, the top‑seeded pair Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand maintained their momentum by defeating Zenith Abbigail and Likhita Srivastava, 21‑17, 21‑12. Jolly also partnered with Hariharan Amsakarunan in mixed doubles, overpowering the second‑seeded duo Rohan Kapoor and Ruthvika Gadde 24‑22, 21‑15. On the men’s side, Hariharan and MR Arjun advanced to the quarterfinals with a solid 21‑12, 21‑18 win over Malaysia’s Lau Yi Sheng and Lim Tze Jian.
Earlier in the day, top seeds Unnati Hooda and Jason Teh opened their campaigns with decisive straight‑game victories, setting a strong tone for the event. Former champion Kidambi Srikanth kept his bid for another deep run alive after a smooth 21‑13, 21‑10 win over compatriot Kavin Thangam.
