Venus Williams and Leylah Fernandez Were Sent Home from US Open Women’s Doubles
In a disappointing exit at the US Open, tennis legend Venus Williams, 45, and her Canadian partner Leylah Fernandez were eliminated from the women’s doubles event. They lost to the top-seeded American team of Taylor Townsend and Czech player Katerina Siniakova in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2, and are now out of the tournament.
Townsend and Siniakova showed strong performance, confidently moving into the semifinals. Townsend praised her opponents, saying, “I’m really happy with how we played today, especially against tough opponents like Venus and Leylah. Venus is a legend who knows how to win, and Leylah is a fighter. We stayed focused and played solid from start to finish, which made me very proud.”
Venus Williams had entered the doubles draw with a wildcard, also playing singles and mixed doubles at the US Open. Her participation showcased her ongoing love for the game, despite her age.
Meanwhile, the defending US Open doubles champions, Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini from Italy, continued their quest for back-to-back titles. They narrowly beat the American seed Asia Muhammad and Dutch player Demi Schuurs in a tough match, with scores of 6-1, 7-6(5).
In another exciting match, Canada’s Gabriela Dabrowski and New Zealand’s Erin Routliffe lost the first set 0-6 to Hungary’s Timea Babos and Brazil’s Luisa Stefani. Wimbledon champions and the No. 4 seeded team, Veronika Kudermetova from Russia and Germany’s Elise Mertens, also had a great day. They secured a commanding 6-4, 6-2 victory over the No. 5 seeds, Mirra Andreeva and Diana Shnaider.
