Not working on temporary respite, but sustainable peace: Russia

Moscow, Dec 11 (LatestNewsX) – Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told reporters on Thursday that Russia will keep pursuing its aims in Ukraine no matter how soon the fighting should end. He said the objectives have been laid out clearly by President Vladimir Putin, a local news outlet reported.

Lavrov explained, “The specific objectives were made public by our President and worked through in Anchorage, where we agreed on the best way to reach these goals in a setting that’s not a cease‑fire or a temporary pause but a durable peace. We’ll follow that path, no matter what deadlines are proposed,” the agency Tass quoted him as saying during the embassy’s round‑table on Ukraine’s settlement.

“For Russia, the key is the essence: the security of the Federation and the well‑being of its people, whom the Kyiv regime has labeled terrorists and stripped of rights. That is what we’re after,” he added.

Earlier, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told a regular media briefing that Russia prioritises lasting, sustainable peace over a cease‑fire. When asked about President Volodymyr Zelensky’s “energy truce” proposal, he replied that they’re working on genuine peace, not a cease‑fire. “A durable, lasting peace achieved through formal documents is our top priority,” he added.

Zelensky says Ukraine is drafting a plan for an energy truce with Russia and expects Russia to adopt the mechanism. In early December, Peskov dismissed reports that Putin had rejected a U.S. peace proposal, calling them “incorrect.” He noted that he could set up a phone call between Putin and former President Donald Trump at any time, but urged that progress must first be made at the expert level. “A call can happen any moment, and we can organise it quickly,” he said, echoing previous remarks by presidential aide Yuri Ushakov about ongoing expert‑level work. “It’s at that level where results are produced, laying the groundwork for higher‑level contacts.” Peskov also thanked Trump and his administration for their help in moving toward a peaceful resolution of the Ukraine situation.
