Diwali : 89 injured in firecracker accidents in TN, says Health Minister

The Deepavali celebrations in Tamil Nadu have seen a surge in firecracker‑related injuries, Health Minister Ma Subramanian reported Monday. Up to 89 people were injured across the state, but the minister said no deaths have been recorded.

During a tour of burn wards at Kilpauk Medical College and Hospital, the minister explained the current status: 41 patients have been treated and released, while 48 remain in treatment at various hospitals. Of those, 32 had major surgeries. He added that the number of cases is lower than last year’s festival.

To counter the spike in burn cases, the health department opened dedicated burn treatment wards in all government, district headquarters and block‑level hospitals. All government medical college hospitals also added 20 extra beds for burn patients.

The minister spoke with senior officials—including Dr K. Rajamannar, Dr M. E. Geetha, Dr Bhaskar, Dr Vasu and Dr Mahadevan—to review patient care and hospital readiness.

When asked about flood preparedness for the Northeast Monsoon, Ma Subramanian said flood‑control work at the Government General Hospital in Royapettah is complete. The hospital had dealt with serious flooding in the past because nearby metro construction blocked drainage channels, but the issue has now been fixed.

He reassured residents that the state is ready to handle both festival‑related injuries and weather‑related emergencies, guaranteeing continuous medical services across Tamil Nadu.
