UAE: Nature Guardians Majlis mobilises private sector for nature-positive future

Dubai, UAE – The UAE is pushing ahead with its green goals, hosting the third Nature Guardians Majlis focused on the private sector and third sector. On October 2, 2025, the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE) brought together business leaders, NGOs, universities, and research centers in Dubai to spark ideas for a nature-positive economy.

Dr. Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahak, the Minister of Climate Change and Environment, chaired the event at MOCCAE headquarters. Drawing from the traditional Emirati Majlis style, it created space for open talks on tackling environmental challenges through nature-based solutions.

This gathering ties into the UAE’s big plans to lead the IUCN World Conservation Congress 2025 in Abu Dhabi. It follows the first Majlis in New York during the UN General Assembly and a second in Dubai that aligned government efforts around nature conservation in national development.

This time, the spotlight fell on how private companies, nonprofits, and academic groups drive innovation. Leaders shared ways to blend science, tech, and finance to boost sustainable growth while protecting ecosystems. The goal? Speed up the shift to a nature-positive economy by turning conservation into smart investments, like green bonds and carbon credits.

Big names joined the discussions, including the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW), Mawarid Holding Investment, Yas SeaWorld Research and Rescue Center, Emirates Nature-WWF, New York University Abu Dhabi, ADNOC, Beeah Group, 4 Earth Intelligence, Nabat, the American University in Dubai, and the College of Marine Sciences at Khorfakkan University. MOCCAE officials also took part.

Minister Al Dahak stressed how vital these sectors are to the UAE’s climate and nature agenda. "The private and third sectors form key pillars in our journey toward a sustainable future," she said. She highlighted how the Majlis united stakeholders to weave nature into business strategies, scale up nature-based solutions with fresh financing, and use tech for real impact. As the IUCN Congress nears, she added, these talks will shape UAE leadership and build a resilient economy that helps people and the planet.

The event broke into four roundtables for focused chats:

  • Leadership in the Age of Scrutiny: Companies explored embedding biodiversity into their operations and supply chains, going beyond basic CSR. NGOs weighed in on market hurdles and opportunities for a greener economy.

  • The Investment Challenge: Attendees tackled how to grow nature-based solutions from small pilots to big scale. They discussed tools like blended finance and carbon credits to draw in private money, plus how data proves returns on investment.

  • Innovation and Accountability: The group prioritized new business models, tech like AI for tracking biodiversity, and policy tweaks for change. They covered building transparent data systems and involving communities for fair outcomes.

  • The Legacy Commitment: Looking to the IUCN Congress and further, participants brainstormed bold partnerships and pledges to create lasting impact in the UAE.

The Majlis wrapped with strong takeaways on UAE environmental leadership:

  • Participants pledged to invest in nature, spark innovation, and form partnerships for long-term prosperity.

  • They outlined scalable team-ups between businesses, tech firms, banks, and NGOs to roll out nature-positive projects faster.

  • Discussions produced policy ideas to guide UAE at the IUCN World Conservation Congress 2025 and influence global talks on conservation.

  • The group called for better coordination across sectors to link efforts, cut waste, and build on past research for steady progress.

  • Raising community awareness emerged as essential, especially educating youth on nature’s value to support sustainable initiatives from private and academic players.

Everyone agreed on showcasing the UAE’s model of balancing economic growth with environmental protection. This positions the country to lead worldwide conversations on climate change and sustainable development at the upcoming congress.
