Dhanush Reveals Why He Named His New Film ‘Idli Kadai’ – A Heartfelt Story from His Childhood
Chennai’s buzzing with excitement as actor and director Dhanush shares the touching reason behind naming his upcoming movie Idli Kadai. At the film’s audio launch event held at Nehru Indoor Stadium, Dhanush opened up about what inspired this unique title.
Dhanush explained that the idli shop itself steals the spotlight in the story. "Some movies get named after the main character, but here, the idli kadai is the real hero," he said with a smile. Fans are already loving this quirky twist for the Tamil film Idli Kadai.
The idea hit Dhanush during a trip abroad. He was with friends Shreyas and Ashwath for a meeting. After it wrapped up, they headed out, but Dhanush went back to his room alone. Like many of us, he turned to Ilaiyaraaja’s timeless songs for comfort. That’s when the track "Naan erikaarai…" played, pulling him straight back to his childhood.
"This song has that magic – it takes you to another time and place, stirring up old memories," Dhanush shared. It transported him to summers when he was eight, visiting his mom’s native village with her. They’d stay for two to two-and-a-half months at his grandmother’s place. The village was tiny, with just two buses coming and going each day. But there was one spot that stood out: a simple idli shop.
Dhanush and his sisters would hustle in the fields, picking flowers to earn a few coins just to buy idlis from that shop. "No fancy, expensive restaurant I’ve been to later in life could match the joy, peace, and satisfaction I felt eating those idlis there," he recalled. It’s these nostalgic vibes that sparked the Idli Kadai movie concept, blending Dhanush’s love for authentic Tamil culture and heartfelt storytelling.
For those catching up, Idli Kadai stars Dhanush and Nithya Menen in the lead roles. Dhanush also directs this one, marking another exciting project from his Wunderbar Films, co-produced with Dawn Pictures. Kiran Koushik handles the cinematography, while G V Prakash composes the music – a combo that’s already generating buzz among Tamil cinema fans.
Originally set for a worldwide release on April 10 this year, the makers pushed it to October 1 for a bigger impact. And get this: Arun Vijay steps in as the antagonist, promising epic face-offs with Dhanush that could steal the show. Shalini Pandey joins the cast in a key role, just as rumors suggested.
With its roots in simple joys like street-side idlis and village life, Idli Kadai feels like a fresh take on Dhanush’s signature style. Tamil movie enthusiasts can’t wait to see how this idli shop becomes the star – mark your calendars for October!
