Former Indian cricketer Mohammad Kaif has given a big thumbs up to Suryakumar Yadav’s captaincy in the ongoing Asia Cup 2025. Despite all the social media buzz, Suryakumar has kept his cool and led India to back-to-back wins, staying laser-focused on the game.
Suryakumar is captaining the Indian T20I team for the first time in this tournament, and they’re on fire so far. In their opening match, India crushed UAE by nine wickets. Then, they delivered a solid seven-wicket victory over rivals Pakistan, keeping their unbeaten streak alive.
Kaif, who knows a thing or two about cricket, shared his thoughts on X (formerly Twitter). “Suryakumar Yadav emerges as a true leader in this Asia Cup. Scoring winning runs in a high-pressure game, marshalling the bowlers intelligently, not losing focus despite social media noise. SKY is a complete captain,” he posted.
This comes after Suryakumar took over as India’s full-time T20I skipper following Rohit Sharma’s retirement from the format. Rohit, the Nagpur-born opener, stepped away after guiding India to T20 World Cup glory in June 2024.
Against Pakistan on Sunday, Suryakumar shone with the bat. He smashed an unbeaten 47 off 37 balls and sealed the 128-run chase with a massive six on the second-last ball of the 16th over. India’s bowlers set the tone first, restricting Pakistan to just 127/9 in 20 overs. Kuldeep Yadav starred with 3/18 in his four overs.
Openers Shubman Gill and Abhishek Sharma gave India a flying start, and Suryakumar’s steady innings made sure they cruised home comfortably.
With two wins from two games, India tops Group A and has qualified for the Super Four stage. The top teams from Group A and B will battle it out there for a finals spot.
Next up, India faces Oman in their final group match on Friday, September 19, at Zayed Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi. Fans are excited to see if Suryakumar can keep the winning momentum going in this Asia Cup thriller.
