UAE Strongly Protests Israel’s Strike on Hamas Leaders in Qatar
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has taken a firm stand against Israel’s recent airstrike on Hamas leaders in Qatar. On September 12, UAE Minister of State for International Cooperation Reem bint Ebrahim Al Hashimy summoned Israel’s Deputy Head of Mission in Abu Dhabi, David Ohad Horsandi, to voice a sharp condemnation. The UAE Foreign Ministry slammed the attack as a "blatant and cowardly" move that targeted Qatar and followed hostile remarks from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Al Hashimy made it clear: any aggression against a Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member like Qatar threatens the entire region’s security. This comes as the UAE and other Arab nations rally behind Qatar amid rising tensions in the Middle East.
Support for Qatar is pouring in from across the region and beyond. UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan visited Doha to show solidarity, joining other leaders in backing the tiny Gulf nation. On the international front, Qatar’s Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani is set to meet top US officials soon. This follows strong backlash from United Nations Security Council members, who condemned Israel’s Qatar airstrike.
Hamas, the Palestinian group hit by the strike, vows to keep fighting. Leaders say their core goals—a full Israeli troop withdrawal from Gaza and rebuilding the war-torn area—remain unchanged. The group claims the attack killed five members but missed key negotiators, who were in Doha to mediate Gaza ceasefire talks.
The strike has sparked controversy over US involvement. On September 10, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said the US warned Qatar in advance. She explained that President Trump ordered Special Envoy Witkoff to notify Qatari officials about the impending Israel airstrike, stressing Qatar’s status as a close US ally.
But Qatar rejects this claim outright. Majed Al Ansari, spokesperson for Qatar’s Foreign Ministry, called the statements "baseless." He posted on X (formerly Twitter) that a US call only came as explosions from the Israeli attack echoed in Doha—after the damage was done.
Israel launched the operation using over 10 fighter jets, including US-made F-35I stealth aircraft that dodge radar, according to reports from CNN. The airstrike targeted a residential area in Doha, Qatar’s capital, where Hamas leaders were staying.
Qatar’s Prime Minister didn’t hold back in his response. He labeled Israel a "rogue player" in the Middle East and described the attack as "state terrorism." Speaking at a news conference, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani said the US reached out just 10 minutes after the strike began. He accused Israel of using advanced weapons to evade detection, further straining ties in the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict.
This incident highlights Qatar’s role as a key mediator in Gaza talks and the fragile alliances in the region. As reactions build, it could impact broader Middle East peace efforts.
