Canada’s foreign‑affairs minister, Anita Anand, is heading to the Indo‑Pacific on a six‑day trip that began on Friday, October 12, and will end on Wednesday, October 17. According to a government release, the tour will cover India, Singapore and China and is part of Canada’s Indo‑Pacific Strategy to boost ties and cooperation in the region.
In Delhi, Anand will sit down with Indian external‑affairs minister S. Jaishankar and commerce minister Piyush Goyal. The talks aim to build a framework for strategic partnership that covers trade diversification, energy transition and security cooperation. The ministers will also discuss how Canada can help India’s growing economy.
After New Delhi, Anand will stop in Mumbai to meet Canadian and Indian businesses. The meeting will focus on investment and job creation, looking for ways to strengthen economic ties between the two countries.
The Canadian minister will then fly to Singapore to meet Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan. The visit commemorates 60 years of diplomatic relations between Canada and Singapore and aims to push forward a free‑trade deal that Canada and ASEAN partners are negotiating. The leaders will emphasise the importance of concluding the agreement by 2026.
In Beijing, Anand will meet China’s top foreign‑affairs figure, Wang Yi, and the director of the Chinese Office of the Central Commission for Foreign Affairs. The cities have enjoyed 55 years of diplomatic ties, and the ministers will review the Canada‑China Strategic Partnership, discuss the evolving global context and address issues key to the Canadian economy.
“To keep Canada strong at home, we must have strong, stable partners abroad,” Anand said. “I am building bridges and increasing cooperation with India, Singapore and China. In line with Canada’s Indo‑Pacific Strategy, I will work to make Canada a trusted, reliable partner of choice for the region and its economies.”
