Gujarat govt disburses over Rs 1,161cr for students’ assistance under 2 key schemes

Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel marked four years in office on September 13, and the state government is celebrating by spotlighting two game-changing education schemes launched in March 2024. These initiatives, Namo Lakshmi Yojana and Namo Saraswati Vigyan Sadhana Yojana, focus on giving students financial help to boost their learning and future prospects.

First up, the Namo Lakshmi Yojana targets girl students in classes 9 to 12. It offers Rs 50,000 in financial aid over four years to keep them in school and finish strong. So far, over 10.49 lakh girls have grabbed this support, totaling more than Rs 1,000 crore. To make things smooth, the government rolled out a special Namo Lakshmi Portal for easy applications and tracking.

Then there’s the Namo Saraswati Vigyan Sadhana Yojana, which helps science stream students in classes 11 and 12. They get Rs 25,000 spread over two years, but only if they score 50% or above in their class 10 board exams and join schools recognized by GSHSEB or CBSE. Already, 1.50 lakh students have benefited, with over Rs 161 crore disbursed. A dedicated Namo Saraswati Portal handles the process efficiently.

These schemes tie right into Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Viksit Bharat @2047 vision. They aim to build a skilled workforce ready for Gujarat’s booming sectors like semiconductors, green energy, and digital sciences.

But Gujarat’s education system still faces big challenges. The state runs about 34,500 government schools, including nearly 32,000 primary ones. Yet, 1,606 schools operate with just one teacher, and over 19,000 teacher posts sit vacant. Infrastructure lags too, creating real hurdles for students.

To tackle this head-on, the government started the Mission Schools of Excellence program. It covers around 40,000 government and grant-in-aid schools. They’ve already built more than 13,000 new classrooms, with 31,000 more in the works. Plus, over one lakh smart classrooms and 21,000 computer labs now equip kids for modern learning.

Progress is clear: Nearly 98% of schools have computers, and 94% offer internet access. STEM labs and upgraded classrooms are popping up fast, making education more accessible and top-notch for everyone in Gujarat.
