Israel hits Houthi military, intelligence sites in Sana’a

Israel’s air force launched a major series of strikes deep inside Yemen, hitting key Houthi targets in the capital of Sanaa on Thursday. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed the operation, which targeted the security, intelligence, and military setups of the Iran-backed Houthi group.

Israeli jets zeroed in on high-value sites, including the Houthi General Staff Command Headquarters, intelligence complexes, the Military Information Department headquarters, and several military camps stocking weapons and hosting fighters. These spots play a big role in the Houthis’ attacks on Israel and their crackdown on internal opponents through things like political prisons and torture, according to the IDF.

The strikes come after a Houthi drone hit Israel’s southern city of Eilat on Saturday, injuring more than 20 people—two of them in critical condition. It’s part of Israel’s pushback against the Houthis, who have ramped up their assaults since the Israel-Hamas war heated up again in March.

Since Israel restarted its campaign against Hamas in Gaza after a brief truce on March 18, the Houthis have fired over 70 ballistic missiles and more than 25 drones toward Israel. Most got shot down or missed their mark. Going back to the Hamas attacks on October 7, 2023, the group has unleashed over 200 missiles and 170 drones in total.

The Houthis aren’t just targeting Israel—they’ve also gone after shipping in the Red Sea. From bases along Yemen’s coast, they’ve attacked or disrupted more than 100 vessels passing through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a vital chokepoint linking the Indian Ocean to the Suez Canal and beyond. This key route carries much of the world’s oil, and the Houthi Red Sea attacks have shut down Israel’s Eilat port, causing major headaches for global trade.

The whole conflict traces back to the brutal Hamas assault on October 7, when militants killed about 1,200 people in Israeli communities near the Gaza border and took 252 hostages—Israelis and foreigners alike. Today, 48 hostages remain in Gaza, with around 20 believed to still be alive.
