Kamal Haasan commends Mohanlal on being conferred with India’s highest award in cinema
Kamal Haasan, the iconic Tamil actor and Rajya Sabha member, just gave a big shoutout to his friend Mohanlal after the Malayalam superstar snagged India’s top film honor, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award.
On Wednesday, Haasan shared a photo on X (that’s Twitter now) showing Mohanlal—affectionately called Lalettan in Kerala—receiving the award from President Droupadi Murmu at the 71st National Film Awards ceremony. Haasan’s message read: “Delighted to see my dear friend Lalettan @Mohanlal honoured with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award. A true artist whose craft has touched millions and will continue to inspire generations. A richly deserved recognition.”
Mohanlal has built an amazing career in Indian cinema over nearly five decades. Fans love him for his natural acting style and spot-on dialogue delivery. He kicked off with a small role in the 1978 film “Thiranottam,” which finally hit screens in 2005. But he really took off in the 1980s and 1990s, starring in everything from dramas and action flicks to comedies and thrillers.
The versatile actor has racked up over 350 movies in languages like Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, and Kannada. Some of his standout roles came in hits like “Rajavinte Makan,” which made him an action hero, plus classics such as “Kireedam,” “Bharatham,” “Vanaprastham,” “Kilukkam,” “Narasimham,” and “Spadikam.” He even shone in Hindi cinema with “Company” (2002) and Tamil’s “Iruvar” (1997).
Mohanlal’s talent hasn’t gone unnoticed—he’s won five National Film Awards and nine Kerala State Film Awards. Beyond the screen, he’s big on giving back, supporting philanthropy and cultural projects in Kerala that keep the arts alive.
