NYPD officer shoots, kills box cutter-wielding madman in front of his parents

An NYPD officer fired his weapon and killed a man who was armed with a box cutter during a domestic dispute in Queens on Sunday morning.

The incident began when the suspect’s parents called 911 at about 12:25 a.m. to 1170 Nameoke Street in the Far Rockaway section of Queens. Early on, two officers entered the apartment, but the son was not in sight.

When the parents and the officers left the unit, they saw the man standing in the hallway holding a box cutter. The father had a confrontation with his son, who was repeatedly told by officers to drop the weapon and repeatedly refused.

In an attempt to subdue the suspect, one officer struck him with a Taser. The man then lunged forward, brandishing the box cutter, while his father retreated behind the officers. A second officer fired his gun when the suspect would not relinquish the blade.

The attacker was transported to Jamaica Hospital, where he later died. The police department released a photograph of the box cutter, which had a tape-wrapped handle, during a press conference held early that morning. The officers’ names were not disclosed.
