MP: 11 die, 3 missing in twin accidents during Durga idol immersion; CM Yadav announces Rs 4 lakh aid

Tragic accidents during Durga immersion celebrations in Madhya Pradesh have left communities reeling, with at least 11 people dead and several others missing. These incidents highlight growing safety worries around religious processions and overloaded vehicles like tractor-trolleys.

In Khandwa district’s Jamli village, a tractor-trolley packed with devotees and a Durga idol flipped over and plunged into a pond while crossing a narrow culvert. The vehicle carried about 20 to 25 people from nearby Ardla and Jamli villages, making it dangerously overloaded. Rescue teams have pulled out 11 bodies so far, including eight heartbreakingly young children. Divers and local authorities fear more victims remain trapped underwater, and search efforts continue non-stop under the Pandhana police station’s watch.

District Collector and Superintendent of Police rushed to the site right after hearing the news. They brought in an earthmover to drag the sunken trolley from the pond, while divers comb the water for survivors or additional bodies. The recovered remains head to Pandhana Community Health Centre for processing.

Chief Minister Mohan Yadav called the Khandwa accident “deeply tragic” and shared his condolences with the grieving families. He promised Rs 4 lakh in financial aid to each deceased person’s next of kin and ensured injured victims get immediate medical care at the closest hospital.

Meanwhile, in Ujjain district, another mishap unfolded near Narsingha village in Badnagar. A tractor-trolley transporting a Durga idol for immersion tumbled into the Chambal River with eight people on board. Rescuers saved five quickly, but three others are still missing. Police and local teams now scour the river for them, coordinating a tense search operation.

These back-to-back Durga Puja immersion accidents in Madhya Pradesh have sparked urgent calls for better safety rules. Experts point to risks from using tractor-trolleys for crowded transports during festivals. The state government now directs district officials to check immersion routes closely and beef up safety steps for upcoming events.

As families mourn their losses amid the festive season, officials keep pushing rescue work and offering support to those hit hardest by these tractor-trolley tragedies.
