Senior IPS Officer N. Sanjay Under Investigation for Alleged Financial Irregularities in Andhra Pradesh
Vijayawada, September 4 – The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) is continuing to question N. Sanjay, a senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, as part of an ongoing investigation into allegations of misuse of government funds. Sanjay, a 1996-batch IPS officer, is facing serious charges related to financial misconduct during his time in various police department roles.
This is the third day that ACB officials have taken Sanjay into custody. The ACB Special Court previously authorized a three-day interrogation period, which is now underway. Authorities are questioning him about claims of financial irregularities, improper fund handling, and procedural violations.
Sanjay has served as Director General of the Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Response & Fire Services and was also Additional Director General of the Crime Investigation Department (CID). He is accused of manipulating tenders, especially for a project involving the development and maintenance of the AGNI – NOC (Governance & NOC Integration) web portal and mobile app. There are also allegations that he authorized equipment procurement without following proper tender procedures and that payments were irregularly made to private companies.
The investigation also looks into allegations of faulty project execution and financial irregularities in payments. Sanjay surrendered in court on August 26 after the Supreme Court directed him to do so. He was then remanded to 15 days of judicial custody.
It’s important to note that the Supreme Court dismissed Sanjay’s anticipatory bail request on July 31, which had been granted by the Andhra Pradesh High Court earlier in January 2025. The High Court had considered Sanjay’s position as an IPS officer and believed the chances of his fleeing were minimal. However, the state government challenged this decision, leading to the Supreme Court’s order for Sanjay to surrender.
During the previous government led by the YSR Congress Party, Sanjay was at the forefront of investigations into high-profile cases. As CID Chief, he supervised probes into the Andhra Pradesh Skill Development Corporation scam and the allegations surrounding the Amravati Inner Ring Road project, which led to the arrest and detention of opposition leader N. Chandrababu Naidu for nearly two months.
With the change in government in June 2024, after the TDP-led NDA coalition came to power, Sanjay was transferred and asked to report to the Director General of Police (DGP). The new administration also ordered an inquiry by the Vigilance & Enforcement Department into the allegations against him.
Following these investigations, Sanjay was suspended on December 4, and the ACB registered a case against him on December 24 for alleged misuse of government funds.
This case highlights ongoing efforts by authorities in Andhra Pradesh to crack down on corruption and ensure accountability within the police department. The investigation continues, and more updates are expected as authorities look into the full extent of the allegations.
