In a heartbreaking incident in Karnataka’s Hassan district, a tanker lorry plowed into a lively Ganpati immersion procession, claiming the lives of at least nine people. The accident happened on September 12 evening, turning a festive celebration into a scene of sorrow.
The crash occurred between 8 pm and 8:45 pm in Mosale Hosalli village. Eyewitnesses say the tanker driver lost control and rammed straight into the crowd carrying the Ganpati idol for immersion. Among the victims were six villagers and three engineering students, all full of life and joy during the Ganesh festival. The driver himself suffered injuries and is under treatment.

Hassan Inspector General of Police (IGP) Boralingaiah shared the devastating details with reporters. “Nine people lost their lives in this tragic tanker lorry accident, and over 20 others got seriously hurt,” he said. Rescue teams rushed to the spot, and the injured received immediate medical help at nearby hospitals.
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah quickly reacted to the Ganpati procession accident, expressing deep grief. He announced Rs 5 lakh compensation for each family of the deceased and promised to cover all medical expenses for the injured. “This tanker crash in Hassan is a painful loss. My heart goes out to the families. We pray for the departed souls and a quick recovery for the hurt,” the CM stated.
Former Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy also voiced his shock over the Hassan tanker accident. In a social media post, he called it a “horrific tragedy” during the Ganapati immersion. “Devotees lost their lives in this unfortunate incident. The government must ensure top-notch free treatment for the injured and support for the grieving families,” he urged, praying for peace for the souls and strength for everyone affected.
As investigations continue into what caused the reckless driving, the community in Hassan mourns the loss during this sacred Ganesh Chaturthi time.
