Michigan babysitter accused of sexually abusing children in her care faces 47 charges, police say

Gaila Bennett, 63, of Midland, Michigan, faces 47 criminal charges after a family claims she sexually abused their children while they were in her care from 2013 to 2020.

According to the Michigan State Police, the alleged abuse occurred at Bennett’s home on Prairie Road in Midland County. The investigation began after a Bay County family reported the incidents. A victim told detectives that she was assaulted nearly every day from kindergarten onward. Police also say Bennett took photographs of the abuse, which are now being examined.

Bennett was arrested on October 17. During the arrest, authorities seized several electronic devices from her residence for evidence. She is being held on a $5 million bond and will return to court on November 4.

The charges include 24 counts of first‑degree criminal sexual conduct with a child under 13, 12 counts of second‑degree criminal sexual conduct with a child under 13, and 11 counts of assault with intent to commit sexual penetration. Michigan State Police say the incident remains under investigation and additional charges may be filed.

The case has drawn wide attention as it highlights alleged abuse by a trusted babysitter and the serious legal consequences that can follow. The Midland County Sheriff’s Department and the state police have not yet commented further.
