Delhi Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta interacts with DU law students

In Delhi today

New Delhi, Oct 16 – Speaker Vijender Gupta met first‑ and second‑year law students from the University of Delhi’s Campus Law Centre at the Delhi Legislative Assembly. The visit was part of the students’ curriculum to see how a legislature works and to learn its history.

Gupta walked the students through the historic Assembly House and explained the building’s origins. He told them that Delhi became the capital in 1912 and that the old Secretariat, which once served as the Central Legislative Assembly, now sits in the very heart of the city’s parliamentary tradition.

The Speaker also highlighted famous leaders who helped shape India’s laws, such as Gopal Krishna Gokhale and Lala Lajpat Rai. He pointed out that the current Assembly complex covers 22 acres, making it one of the largest legislative premises in the country.

Gupta clarified Delhi’s unique status under Article 239AA, which gives the National Capital Territory a 70‑member Assembly. He traced the city’s journey from a Union Territory to a fully elected legislature in 1993 and gave an overview of the current (eighth) Assembly’s composition and key milestones.

The speaker encouraged the law students to feel proud of India’s democratic institutions and to carry forward a commitment to constitutional values and public service. The visit gave the young scholars firsthand insight into how a legislature shapes policy and governs a city.
