Balrampur, Chhattisgarh – On October 8, residents in the Balrampur‑Ramanujganj district celebrated a fresh wave of solar power installed under India’s Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Yojana, the “Muft Bijli Yojana.” The scheme gives free or heavily discounted solar panels to every home, cutting electricity bills and lowering the state’s carbon footprint.
Rohit Gupta, a local farmer, recently added a 3‑kilowatt rooftop unit to his house thanks to the plan. He received a ₹78,000 subsidy from the central government and another ₹30,000 from Chhattisgarh state, plus an easy installment loan from a nearby bank. The panel was up and running within days, and Rohit now pays far less monthly for power. “Seeing the bill each month was always a worry,” he told . “Now I generate my own clean energy, and the extra power I can sell later will help me even more.”
The Surya Ghar program, launched in February 2024, aims to connect every Indian household to affordable, clean solar energy. By combining central and state subsidies with bank financing, the scheme makes renewable electricity accessible to middle‑ and low‑income families. Rohit urges everyone else to join: “It’s a long‑term investment that saves money and protects the environment.”
With growing penetration in Balrampur, the Muft Bijli Yojana is proving that solar power can transform everyday life and move India toward a greener future.
