BJP criticises Siddaramaiah govt for petrol price hike ‘proposal’

In Bengaluru on November 13, the BJP blasted the state’s Congress government led by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah for supposedly preparing another hike in petrol prices—just ₹1 a litre.
The party’s criticism came from opposition leader R. Ashoka, who called for Siddaramaiah’s resignation and said the move would hit ordinary people’s wallets again.
Gas prices in Karnataka have gone up a few times this year.
In June 2024, petrol was raised by ₹3 a litre and diesel by ₹3.5. Diesel rose again by ₹2 in April 2025, and the state now plans to add another ₹1 to petrol this November.
Ashoka slammed the Congress government as “misrule, inefficiency and corruption.” He asked how long the people of Karnataka will bear the cost of these policy changes and pointed out the government’s perceived neglect of farmers. The state promised farmers compensation within 30 days, but the promised payments have not yet materialised.
The government is also considering a ₹1 per litre cess on petrol, diesel and ethanol to support unorganised workers. Labour officials say the measure could reach about 1.3 million workers and support 62 lakh families. Roughly ₹2,120 crore could be raised, and around ₹1,772 crore could fund health facilities for those workers.
The debate continues as Karnataka’s residents weigh the cost of fuel against the promised support for the state’s most vulnerable workers and farmers.
