Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani snubs pols who didn’t back him as he unveils elected officials ‘advisory’ panel
There’s Zo Love Lost
Mayor‑elect Zohran Mamdani has just announced the formation of a “Elected Officials Advisory Committee” that brings together more than 100 elected leaders from New York City. The council is meant to help turn his broad socialist playbook into policy, but many key figures who didn’t back his landmark run were left out.
The committee omits Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, Representative Dan Goldman and incoming City Council Speaker Julie Menin—none of whom threw their support behind Mamdani. Inside the room, some watchers said the lineup felt too uniform. Democratic operative Ken Frydman, who was in on the private meeting, insisted the advisory board should include people who “didn’t endorse and champion” Mamdani’s agenda, urging the presence of moderate Democrats, conservative Republicans and independents.
Less than three weeks before Mamdani’s inauguration, he has named just three key picks, including NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch. An aide from the Queens assemblyman’s team told reporters that additional City Hall appointments would follow soon.
Sources said the meeting was largely “talk‑heavy” with little concrete detail, and one commented it felt like a “validation” exercise rather than a planning session.
The group is already led by major names such as Representative Alexandria Ocasio‑Cortez (D‑Bronx), Gov. Kathy Hochul, State Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart‑Cousins and State Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries—who only endorsed Mamdani days before Election Day—also made the list. Even some of Mamdani’s strongest backers, like former congressman Jamaal Bowman, were excluded.
After the committee’s first public appearance, Mamdani praised the roster as a cross‑government team that backs his “affordability” agenda. He said the coalition “seeks cooperation amidst the collective that listens to different views, instead of hiding in an echo chamber.”
