EAM Jaishankar appreciates outgoing Mexico envoy’s contribution to strengthening ties

India-Mexico Ties Strengthen: EAM S Jaishankar Bids Farewell to Outgoing Ambassador

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar met Mexico’s outgoing Ambassador to India, Federico Salas, in New Delhi on Tuesday. The meeting highlighted the strong bilateral ties between India and Mexico, with Jaishankar praising Salas for his key role in boosting these relations.

After the farewell call, Jaishankar shared his thoughts on X (formerly Twitter). He wrote, "Pleased to meet Ambassador Federico Salas of Mexico for a farewell call today. Appreciate his personal contribution to strengthening our ties. Wish him best for all future endeavors." This warm exchange shows how leaders from both nations value their growing partnership.

Just a couple of months back, in July, Jaishankar connected with Mexico’s Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Juan Ramon de la Fuente, during the BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The two discussed ways to take India-Mexico relations to the next level, zeroing in on key areas like health, digital technology, space exploration, and more. Jaishankar posted about it on X, saying, "Pleased to meet Juan Ramon de la Fuente, Secretary of Foreign Affairs of Mexico, in Rio de Janeiro today. Discussed further advancement of our partnership focusing on health, digital, technology and space."

India and Mexico share so much in common—from similar weather patterns and rich biodiversity to deep-rooted cultural and family values. Both countries boast ancient civilizational heritage, and their connections date back centuries. Fun fact: Mexico became the first Latin American nation to establish diplomatic relations with independent India way back in 1950. As they gear up to celebrate 75 years of these ties in 2025, the excitement is building. Today, India and Mexico team up closely on global stages like the United Nations and G20, working together on big issues.

India keeps a strong presence in Mexico with its Embassy in Mexico City, plus three Honorary Consulates in bustling cities like Guadalajara, Monterrey, and Cancun. You’ll even spot statues and busts of Mahatma Gandhi in major Mexican spots such as Guadalajara, Acapulco, Mexico City, Guanajuato, Cancun, and San Luis Potosi— a nod to the shared respect for peace and wisdom.

Did you know Mexican wheat varieties played a huge part in India’s Green Revolution? Varieties like Sonora wheat, developed with help from Indian scientists and experts at CIMMYT in Mexico, helped India achieve food self-sufficiency in the 1960s. It’s a great example of how India-Mexico collaboration has shaped history and continues to drive progress.

These interactions remind us how bilateral ties between India and Mexico keep evolving, promising even more exciting developments ahead in diplomacy, trade, and innovation.
