‘Veerangna Jhalkari Bai Koli’ is a symbol of freedom struggle’s bravery: Delhi CM

Delhi’s cabinet, headed by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, added the name of the heroic 1857 freedom fighter Veerangna Jhalkari Bai Koli to its special scheme for celebrating birth or death anniversaries of national icons.

In a meeting attended by ministers and department heads, the CM explained that the department of SC/ST/OBC welfare already funds events for celebrated figures such as Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar, saint Ravidas, Maharishi Valmiki, saint Kabir, saint Gadge Ji Maharaj and saint Durbal Nath.

Now, NGOs that want to honor Jhalkari Bai can apply for up to ₹50,000 in support for their anniversary celebrations. The head of the Delhi government said the move recognizes her bravery in the First War of Independence and shows Delhi’s commitment to honouring heroes who shaped India’s history.

Related groups—especially from Scheduled Castes and Backward Classes—had long asked that Jhalkari Bai be included in the scheme. The decision not only pays tribute to a legendary warrior but also reinforces the state’s focus on social justice and equality.
