India among world’s top 5 countries in solar energy: PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday spotlighted India’s impressive growth in green energy and renewable power during his visit to Golaghat in Assam. He pointed out how the country has come a long way in just a decade, especially in solar power generation.
“Ten years back, India was way behind in solar energy production,” Modi said. “But now, we stand among the top five nations worldwide in solar power capacity.” This leap forward shows India’s push towards sustainable energy sources like solar power and biofuels.
In today’s world, Modi stressed the need for alternative fuels to cut down on oil and gas imports. He highlighted ethanol as a smart choice for India’s energy needs. Today, he inaugurated a new bamboo-based ethanol plant in Golaghat, which promises big wins for local farmers and tribal communities in Assam.
The Prime Minister assured steady bamboo supply for the bio-ethanol plant. “We’ll help farmers grow bamboo and buy it directly from them,” he added. To boost this, small bamboo chipping units will pop up in the area, with the government pumping in about Rs 200 crore every year. “This one plant alone will lift thousands of lives here,” Modi noted.
Modi took a dig at the past, reminding everyone that under previous opposition governments, cutting bamboo could land you in jail. For tribal folks, bamboo is a daily essential—used for everything from homes to tools. But restrictions held them back. The current government lifted that ban, and now it’s unlocking huge benefits for Northeast India’s people, especially in ethanol production from bamboo.
Shifting gears, Modi praised Assam’s role in building Aatmanirbhar Bharat, or self-reliant India. The state is at the heart of the national Semiconductor Mission, a game-changer for tech self-sufficiency. “I trust Assam because of its proven strength,” he said, sharing how Assam Tea went from obscurity in colonial days to a global favorite, thanks to the state’s hardworking people.
In this new era, Modi explained, India’s independence hinges on two key areas: energy and semiconductors. Assam shines in both. From bank cards and smartphones to cars, planes, and even space missions, every gadget runs on tiny electronic chips. “If we want to make these at home, we must produce our own chips,” he urged.
That’s where the Semiconductor Mission steps in, with Assam as a cornerstone. A massive semiconductor factory is under construction in Morigaon, backed by Rs 27,000 crore in investment. “This is something every Assamese can take pride in,” Modi concluded, underlining Assam’s growing clout in India’s green energy revolution and semiconductor push.
