Today, September 15, 2025, marks a special milestone—the 76th anniversary of the Indian Police Service (IPS). This elite force forms the backbone of India’s law enforcement, keeping our streets safe and upholding the rule of law across the country.
The IPS kicked off on September 15, 1948, right after India’s independence. It quickly became one of the most respected parts of the All India Services, tackling everything from everyday crime to major threats like terrorism. IPS officers work tirelessly to protect citizens, fight corruption, and ensure justice for all.
The story of IPS training started that very day with the launch of the Central Police Training College (CPTC) in the scenic hills of Mount Abu, Rajasthan. For almost 20 years, this spot trained future leaders through tough drills in fitness, law, and ethics, building the strong foundation for modern policing in India.
By 1967, as India’s needs grew, the college got a big upgrade. It became the National Police Academy (NPA), focusing on advanced skills like smart policing strategies, team leadership, and working with other agencies. Then, in 1974, it earned a fitting new name: Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy (SVPNPA). This honored Sardar Patel, India’s first Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister, who played a key role in creating the All India Services and strengthening our nation’s security.
Just a year later, in 1975, the academy moved to Hyderabad (back then in Andhra Pradesh, now Telangana). The shift opened doors to bigger spaces, cutting-edge facilities, and a prime spot for top-notch training. Today, SVPNPA covers a massive 277 acres in Shivrampalli, Hyderabad, and trains IPS officers who crack the tough All India Civil Services Examination.
Over the years, the academy has kept up with the fast-changing world of law enforcement. It now teaches cutting-edge topics like cybercrime prevention, counter-terrorism tactics, forensic science, and community policing to build trust with locals. Recent courses even dive into Artificial Intelligence in policing, urban security challenges, and national defense strategies, showing how SVPNPA stays ahead of the curve.
As we celebrate 76 years of the IPS, let’s tip our hats to these brave officers. From bustling cities to remote villages, they face tough challenges with discipline and heart. The IPS and SVPNPA remind us of India’s strong commitment to justice, integrity, and serving the people.
