11 killed, one injured in Afghanistan’s deadly road mishap

Tragic Road Accidents Rock Afghanistan: Dozens Dead in Recent Crashes
Afghanistan has seen a heartbreaking wave of road accidents lately, claiming over 100 lives in just a few weeks. From overcrowded cars flipping over to buses skidding off highways, reckless driving keeps causing these deadly incidents. Let’s break down the latest tragedies hitting the headlines.
In the rugged mountains of northern Afghanistan’s Badakhshan province, a terrible crash unfolded on Monday afternoon in Darayem district. A vehicle carrying passengers plunged into a deep ravine, killing 11 people on the spot and injuring one more. Among the victims were seven members of the same family—such a devastating loss. Local police chief Sayed Mir Khangar blamed the driver’s carelessness for the accident, as reported by Xinhua News Agency. These kinds of road accidents in Afghanistan highlight the dangers of poor driving on tricky terrain.
Just hours earlier that same day, another mishap struck in eastern Ghazni province. A car slammed into a bus in the morning, leaving six people dead and one injured. Officials are investigating, but it adds to the growing tally of fatal road crashes in the region.
Flash back to September 2, and northern Jawzjan province faced its own horror. Eight travelers lost their lives, and four others got hurt when their car overturned in Aqcha district on September 1. Provincial police spokesman Qari Abdul Sattar pointed to reckless driving as the main culprit. What’s worse, the driver ignored traffic rules by cramming 12 passengers into a car meant for just five. Overloading vehicles like this is a common issue in Afghanistan road accidents, making crashes even deadlier.
These aren’t isolated events. Back on August 27, a bus flipped over on the highway between southern Kandahar and Kabul, in the Arghandi area west of the capital. At least 25 passengers died, and 27 more suffered injuries. Abdul Mateen Qani, spokesman for the Ministry of Interior Affairs, said reckless driving caused the chaos. Emergency teams rushed in quickly, rushing the injured to nearby hospitals for urgent care. It’s one of the worst bus accidents in recent memory.
Earlier on August 24, another vehicle veered off the road and flipped in Badakhshan province’s Kohistan district, in the Pul-e-Shopay area. Three people, including a woman and a child, died at the scene, while four others got injured. Provincial police spokesman Ehsanullah Kamgar again blamed careless driving. Rescuers acted fast to get the hurt folks to local health centers.
The deadliest of all came in August in western Herat province, where a massive crash killed 79 passengers. With so many road accidents in Afghanistan piling up, authorities are calling for stricter enforcement of traffic rules. Reckless driving, overloading, and rough roads are fueling this crisis—it’s a wake-up call for safer travels across the country. Stay tuned for updates on these ongoing road safety challenges.
