Deepika Kumari welcomed the launch of India’s first Archery Premier League (APL) and said it could spark a wave of new talent. The Olympic‑medallist, who plays for the Chola Chiefs, praised the tournament’s chances for young archers to learn from the world’s best.
“We’re lucky to host a team of top‑ranked international archers,” Kumari said. “This gives our future players a chance to study their mindset, training habits and how they handle pressure. I want the next generation to ask questions, take what they learn, and use it on the field.”
The Chola Chiefs finished fourth in the APL’s opening round, posting four wins and six losses. They’re among the professional franchises competing for a title that could give archery the visibility it needs in India.
Arjun Munda, president of the Archery Association of India (AAI), echoed the sentiment. He highlighted that archery demands mental balance, focus and concentration—skills he believes the league can help develop nationwide. “This is an Indian sport that the whole world now plays,” Munda said. “Local players need encouragement and support. The APL helps us discover talent, raise the sport’s profile, and get more people shooting arrows.”
The APL aims to bring together India’s best with international stars, hoping to boost interest in a sport that has struggled to compete with cricket and football in the country’s public eye. By giving players exposure and fostering a culture of learning, organizers want archery to become a mainstream sport for future generations.
