India, New Zealand looking at things afresh for win-win solution in trade talks

In New Delhi, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal confirmed that India and New Zealand are rewriting their approach to a Free Trade Agreement (FTA). The two sides are now looking beyond tariffs and exploring fresh ways to grow their partnership, the minister said in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

Goyal said the talks respect each country’s concerns and aim for a win‑win deal that moves the relationship to the next level. He was on a working trip to Auckland, where the 4th round of FTA negotiations started on Nov. 3 and will run until Nov. 7.

“The visit is a great chance to see how we’re progressing,” Goyal wrote. “I’m grateful to my friend and counterpart, Todd McClay, for his warm welcome. We’re eager to speed up a comprehensive, mutually beneficial economic partnership.”

During the trip, Goyal will sit with New Zealand industry leaders, investors and the Indian business delegation. He plans to meet the country’s prominent business community to boost trade, investment and innovation links.

A New Zealand‑India Business Forum will take place in the afternoon, followed by a community event with members of the Indian diaspora. The minister said the forum will bring together industry leaders, chambers of commerce and government officials from both nations, reinforcing the growing momentum in bilateral ties.

With these high‑level meetings, India and New Zealand are working to craft an FTA that balances interests and creates new opportunities for businesses in both countries.
