3 Italian police officers killed in farmhouse explosion allegedly set by brothers fighting eviction

Three members of the Italian Carabinieri, a militarised police force, were killed and 13 others injured in an explosion that cracked open a family farm near Verona on Tuesday morning. The blast, investigators say, was caused by gas that the Rampini siblings had poured into the two‑story farmhouse before police entered it.
The Rampini family—brothers Dino and Franco, and their sister Maria Luisa—were taken into custody in Castel d’Azzano, a town 10 km (about 6 miles) southwest of the city of Verona. Police say the brothers and sister are facing charges of pre‑meditated murder.
“When our Carabinieri were executing a court order, they were hit by an intentional gas‑tank explosion,” said Carabinieri commander Colonel Claudio Pagano to Sky TG24. “It was an absolutely insane act.”
The family’s fight over the farm points to a longer conflict. A previous eviction attempt last year was stopped after the Rampinis threatened to blow the house up, according to regional governor Luca Zaia. “The eviction had been carefully planned, but the response was so violent it was hard to predict,” said prosecutor Raffaele Tito.
“I am angry because they took away the farm, the land, and now the house,” Maria Luisa Rampini told Corriere della Sera last year. She continues to accuse authorities of unfairly taking over the family property and says she and her siblings filled the house with gas to fight back.
Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni and Defence Minister Guido Crosetto have expressed condolences for the Carabinieri who died in the blast. The tragedy has reignited debate over property law, policing and rural land disputes in Italy.
