MP man carrying explosive on motorcycle killed after blast midway

Bhopal/Ichhawar (MP), Dec 28 – A 20‑year‑old male was killed when a powerful blast tore through his motorcycle on the Ichhawar‑Ashta road near Ramnagar village in Sehore district, about 55 km from Bhopal. The explosion is believed to have come from explosive material the rider was carrying, leaving his lower body severely damaged and destroying the bike.

The victim, Sukhram Barela, son of Dinesh Barela and a resident of Jamli village, was traveling on his motorcycle (registration MP 37 MN 4489) heading from Ichhawar toward Ramnagar. The incident happened between 10:30 a.m. and 11 a.m., close to a stone‑crushing machine.

Speaking to IANS, Investigation Officer Pankaj Wadekar, who heads the Ichhawar police station, said the blast threw the rider a considerable distance from the road and left him with extensive injuries to his lower body. “No suspicious objects were found at the scene, and the area was immediately secured,” he added.

Wadekar also clarified that, at first glance, the explosive might have been associated with local mining or quarrying activities—“Prima facie, the victim might be carrying the explosive to use in digging a well or small mining in fields or fishing activity, which people in rural areas often do, though illegally.” He emphasized that a thorough forensic investigation is underway.

A forensic team from the Forensic Science Laboratory has rushed to the site to determine the exact type of explosive and its source. Authorities suspect the blast resulted from the illicit transportation of explosives, which could have been used in small‑scale mining operations common in the region.

No other casualties were reported, partly because the crash occurred in a relatively isolated area. The incident has sparked concerns about the unregulated handling and transport of hazardous materials in rural Madhya Pradesh, where similar mining‑related accidents have happened before.

The Sehore Superintendent of Police has set up a special investigation team and is coordinating with anti‑terror units to rule out any deliberate intent. “We are examining all angles thoroughly,” an official said.

The crash site remains cordoned for cleanup and further examination. Local residents expressed shock, noting that the rider was traveling alone. Witnesses have been asked to come forward with any information they might have.

An autopsy report and further legal actions will follow once the forensic findings are available.
