Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Thursday that India will open its nuclear‑energy market to private companies. He delivered the message at the India‑UK CEO Forum in Mumbai, saying the move creates a fresh chance for stronger ties between India and the United Kingdom.
Modi highlighted the government’s focus on building new infrastructure and its plan to hit a 500‑gigawatt renewable‑energy target by 2030. “India and the UK can set global benchmarks together,” he added, inviting UK firms and investors to join India’s energy journey.
The announcement comes amid wide‑scale economic reforms aimed at making business easier and cutting red tape. Modi also referenced recent tax changes, such as a GST overhaul that lowers rates for household items and boosts growth for the middle class and small and medium enterprises.
Key tax cuts include reducing GST on electronics—air conditioners, TVs and dishwashers now face 18 % instead of 28 %. Monitors and projectors also see a 18 % rate. For renewable‑energy equipment, GST drops from 12 % to 5 %, lowering installation costs for homes and industry.
These reforms target a more durable digital economy, encourage tech innovation and strengthen India’s start‑up scene. The government says the tax easing will make everyday products more affordable while driving the country toward a cleaner, more sustainable future.
