National Tennis C’ship: Divya, Akanksha move to second round

In New Delhi, two rising stars shone on a rainy Tuesday at the 30th Fenesta Open National Tennis Championship. Divya Bhardwaj from Gujarat and Akanksha Nitture from Maharashtra both cruised into the second round of women’s singles at the DLTA Complex.
Divya, fresh off qualifying for the main draw, kept her momentum going by beating third seed Pooja Ingale of Maharashtra 6-3, 6-4. The match kicked off with a tight battle, locked at 3-3 in the first set. But Divya turned it around, winning the next three games to take control. The second set followed the same pattern—tied at 3-3 until Divya broke Pooja’s serve for a 5-3 edge. Pooja fought back with some sharp net play to hold one game, but Divya sealed the win and her spot in the next round.
Akanksha, the second seed, made quick work of her opponent, Telangana’s Paavanii Paathak, with a dominant 6-0, 6-0 shutout. From the very first point, Akanksha’s speedy baseline rallies and easy service breaks overwhelmed Paavanii, turning the match into a one-sided showcase.
This Fenesta Open National Tennis Championship packs plenty of excitement, with top players from across India competing for big rewards. The total prize pool tops Rs 21.55 lakh, plus kit allowances for juniors. Winners and runners-up in the U-16 and U-14 singles will each snag a Rs 25,000 tennis scholarship.
Backed by DCM Shriram Ltd. and organized by the All India Tennis Association (AITA) and Delhi Lawn Tennis Association (DLTA), it’s India’s biggest domestic tennis event. Keep an eye out for the boys’ and girls’ U-16 and U-14 qualifying and main draw matches, set for October 5 to 11.
