North Korea and Russia Strengthen Cooperation on Security and Border Projects
In a move that highlights closer ties between North Korea and Russia, the two countries have signed an agreement to boost cooperation in public safety and law enforcement. This news comes from the Russian Embassy in Pyongyang, which announced the deal on Saturday.
The agreement was reached after talks between North Korea’s Public Security Minister Pang Tu-sop and Russia’s Interior Minister Vladimir Kolokoltsev. The meeting took place in Moscow on Tuesday. Although the embassy didn’t reveal all the details of the agreement, they emphasized that both nations agree on the importance of working together to enhance security, especially considering current global political tensions.
Russia pointed out some key areas where both countries will collaborate. These include fighting organized crime across borders, tracking down wanted criminals, and countering extremist groups and terrorism. They also plan to step up efforts to fight illegal drug and human trafficking. Additionally, the two ministers agreed to strengthen cooperation around border areas, making border security a top priority.
One major project that symbolizes their growing partnership is the construction of a road bridge over the Tumen River. The bridge’s construction began in April, and both countries aim to open it next year. Russian President Vladimir Putin mentioned at a recent forum in Vladivostok that there are plans to build more bridges with North Korea. This new infrastructure is expected to boost transportation and trade but could also lead to increased cross-border movement, which may raise concerns about smuggling and other crimes.
Meanwhile, North Korea’s Cultural Minister Sung Jong-gyu recently traveled to Russia to attend a global cultural forum in Saint Petersburg, according to state media reports.
Since signing a strategic partnership treaty last June, North Korea and Russia have been expanding their cooperation across different areas. This includes ties in the military, economic projects, and cultural exchanges, signaling a deeper bond between the two nations.
As their relationship grows, experts watch closely for how increased collaboration might impact regional security and international relations.
