Kerala: CPI-M leaders on defensive after DYFI leader’s audio leak sparks row

CPI-M Faces Heat in Kerala Over Leaked Audio on Party Leaders’ Finances

In Thrissur, Kerala, CPI-M leaders are scrambling to contain a major controversy sparked by a leaked audio clip. The clip features DYFI district secretary and state secretariat member V.P. Sarath Prasad making shocking claims about how party bigwigs allegedly pocket money as they climb the ranks. This has ignited a political firestorm, with the party calling the allegations "baseless" and "twisted."

CPI-M district secretary Abdul Khader jumped in to defend the party. He pointed out that the recording is old—dating back several years—and TV channels are blowing it out of proportion. "Nothing in it reflects the truth," Khader said firmly. "We’ll ask Sarath for a full explanation. Media attacks on CPI-M aren’t new; this is just another one. Our leaders live openly, and those comments were out of line. The party will investigate and act accordingly."

The audio clip, now spreading like wildfire online, reveals Sarath’s bold accusations. He claims that CPI-M members start collecting cash once they gain power. An area secretary might rake in about Rs 10,000 a month, while a district leader could pocket over Rs 25,000, he alleged. "Our future security relies on the money we gather at higher levels," Sarath is heard saying in the clip.

Sarath didn’t hold back on naming names. He targeted senior figures like former State Minister and current MLA A.C. Moideen, accusing him of big-money deals with elite circles. He also pointed fingers at ex-party legislator M.K. Kannan, saying Kannan built a fortune in crores from groundnut sales.

But Sarath quickly clarified his side. The comments came from a private chat five years ago, tied to talks about the Karuvannur Cooperative Bank scam. "Someone recorded me without permission," he explained. "I never thought it’d leak. The people in that meeting are the ones who released it now." He’s trying to put distance between himself and the fresh backlash.

M.K. Kannan dismissed the whole thing with a laugh. "I don’t care about this," he told reporters. "The Enforcement Directorate grilled me for hours, and they found zilch. It doesn’t bother me at all."

This scandal has put CPI-M’s Thrissur unit in the spotlight once more, facing flak from rivals and some awkward questions from within. As Kerala politics heats up, all eyes are on how the party handles this leaked audio controversy and its fallout on leaders like Sarath and Kannan.
