Nirmala Sitharaman unveils statues of three South Indian saints in UP’s Ayodhya

On October 9, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman unveiled three marble statues of legendary South‑Indian musical saints in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh. The statues honor Tyagaraja, Purandara Dasa, and Arunachala Kavi, and the ceremony was held at Ayodhya Brihaspati Kund, with state chief minister Yogi Adityanath present.

Sitharaman highlighted how devotion to Lord Ram runs deep throughout South India. She noted that the saints composed in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Sanskrit—languages that once bridged cultural gaps through Carnatic music—demonstrated unity across the region. “Carnatic music has always been a way of life, transcending linguistic borders,” she said.

The minister praised Tyagaraja’s dedication to the divine, pointing out that he refused to sing for kings and dedicated every song to Lord Ram. She recalled that his famous composition “Seetha Kalyanam” is still sung at South‑Indian weddings, even at her daughter’s nuptials.

Sitharaman also celebrated Arunachala Kavi’s epic poem Ramanatakam, which immortalizes Mother Sita. Quoting the text, she said, “Look at Mother Sita with a hundred thousand eyes—no one is more beautiful than her.” She added that the poet claimed a divine dream guided him to bring his work to Srirangam, a key temple for Lord Ram.

In a nod to literary devotion, the finance minister mentioned Molla, a woman from a potter community who wrote Molla Ramayanam in Telugu. This demonstrates that devotion to Ram spans genders and castes alike.

Throughout her remarks, Sitharaman underscored that these statues in Ayodhya symbolize a shared religious heritage across North and South India. “Seeing these saints here connects us, regardless of where we come from,” she said, thanking the Uttar Pradesh government and CM Yogi for making the event possible.

The unveiling marks a cultural milestone for Ayodhya, showcasing how music, poetry, and faith jointly reinforce India’s spiritual unity around the beloved figure of Lord Ram.
