Longtime serial sex offender finally convicted thanks to victims finding each other on Facebook dating group
An alleged serial sex offender finally got caught and convicted after the victims connected with one another in a Facebook thread known as “Are We Dating the Same Guy?”.
David Kats, 56, was found guilty on more than a dozen charges of sexual assault, after a jury determined that he spent nearly a decade drugging and assaulting women he met on dating apps.
Law enforcement first learned of the pattern when four of Kats’s victims discovered their shared experience in the aforementioned Facebook group, which is normally used to expose cheating partners.
Their shared stories revealed a disturbing routine: each woman had met Kats for a drink, been drugged, and then assaulted at a later time. The victims reported the case to the Parker Police Department, where officers uncovered evidence of intoxicants in Kats’s home.
During the trial, Kats attempted to claim the encounters were consensual and denied any wrongdoing, even though the victims were likely incapacitated. Prosecutors presented text messages from the victims confronting Kats about being drugged, and victims Sherry Salazar and Nicholle Shupe testified about the emotional toll.
On Wednesday, the jury found Kats guilty of all seventeen counts presented, including twelve sexual assault charges. Chief Deputy District Attorney Danielle Jaramillo praised the bravery of the women for bringing the case forward and said their courage made it possible for the defendant to be held accountable.
Kats will be sentenced on April 23 and could face life in prison, according to District Attorney George Brauchler, who described the man as having used drugs, deception and manipulation to prey on trusting women.
