Work on Adilabad airport to commence in a year: Telangana CM

Hyderabad, Dec 4 (LatestNewsX) – Telangana’s Chief Minister, A. Revanth Reddy, told a gathering in Adilabad on Thursday that the new airport project, which has received final approval, is slated to start within a year.

Speaking to the crowd, he mentioned that Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Civil Aviation Minister Rammohan Naidu have pledged both finances and logistical help to see the airport through. The CM emphasized his commitment to lift the underdeveloped district of Adilabad and added, “We will bring Airbus to Adilabad, where even ‘Yerra bus’ (Red bus) hardly traverse.” Here “Red bus” refers to the buses operated by the state‑run Road Transport Corporation.

The Chief Minister also announced plans to set up a new university in the district, to be named after either Indravelli or Kumuram Bheem. He highlighted that irrigation, education and communication infrastructure would be upgraded as part of the district’s development agenda.

During the address, he urged residents to elect capable leaders as sarpanches in the upcoming gram panchayat elections, saying, “Don’t spend money on elections. If possible, sarpanches should be elected unanimously,” before promising funds for village development.

Revanth Reddy was openly critical of the former BRS administration, claiming it had neglected Adilabad. He explained, “The oppressed people dethroned the previous government and gave a big mandate to the people’s government.” He stressed that his top priority is the welfare of all communities and that he reserves political discussions for election periods. He added that he has not taken a single vacation in the last two years.

“I’ve had the privilege of serving as a Zilla Praja Parishad member, MLC, MLA, MP, and now Chief Minister at a young age,” he continued. “I’m working hard to earn the people’s respect and have been governing Telangana without any major hurdles for the past two years.”

The CM singled out former Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao (KCR) for halting the Pranahita–Chevella irrigation project—originally launched at a cost of ₹38 billion under former Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy—to benefit 1.6 million acres in Adilabad. He lamented, “Hundreds of crores were spent to bring water to Adilabad. After the BRS came to power, KCR abandoned the project, altered its name, villages and budget. The BRS built the Kaleshwaram project, costing approximately ₹1.5 trillion, yet it collapsed in just three years. The KCR family made fortunes through commissions from that scheme.”

The CM announced that the state government has already called for tenders to construct a 150‑metre‑high water project near Tummihatti, which will serve Adilabad. He declared he plans to lay the foundation stone for this initiative shortly.
