BJP demands apology from Jharkhand CM over ‘derogatory’ remark on trading community

In Ghatsila, Jharkhand, tensions shot up on Monday after Chief Minister Hemant Soren allegedly made a harsh remark targeting the state’s trading community. The comment came during a rally in Musabani, where Soren was heard saying, “Businessmen first grab the feet and then grab the neck.” The statement was seen by many as a direct insult to the hardworking traders who keep Jharkhand’s commerce running.

BJP leaders have slammed the CM’s words. At a press conference in East Singhbhum, BJP State Executive President and Rajya Sabha MP Aditya Sahu demanded an immediate apology. “That remark is highly derogatory,” Sahu said, adding it devalues the business community that supports the state’s economy and has helped people during the COVID‑19 crisis by supplying essential goods when government services fell short.

Sahu accused Soren’s statement of showing an “arrogance of power.” He warned that if the Chief Minister does not apologize, the BJP and traders may launch protest marches across the state. The MP also blasted the JMM government for corruption and illegal trading. “There’s an open loot of sand, coal, iron, and land. Sand worth Rs 500 is sold for Rs 5,000,” Sahu claimed, pointing to a mafia–government nexus that, according to him, keeps traders under constant threat.

The clash comes as the Ghatsila by‑poll is set for November 11. BJP’s Babulal Soren, son of former CM Champai Soren, will face JMM’s Somesh Soren in the contest. The political drama in Jharkhand is now on a knife‑edge, with the business community and local leaders calling for accountability and safety for traders in the region.
