Kangana Ranaut moves SC challenging summons in a defamation case

Kangana Ranaut Takes Defamation Fight to Supreme Court

Bollywood actress and BJP MP Kangana Ranaut has now knocked on the doors of the Supreme Court after the Punjab and Haryana High Court turned down her plea to cancel a defamation summons. The case stems from a social media post where she allegedly targeted a 73-year-old woman from Punjab, accusing her of being a paid protester.

The trouble started in February 2022 when a Bathinda court issued a summons to Kangana in a defamation complaint filed by Mahinder Kaur, a resident of Bahadurgarh Jandian village in Bathinda district. Kaur claims Kangana wrongly labeled her as the elderly Shaheen Bagh protester who made it to Time magazine’s list of influential Indians. In a now-deleted retweet on X (formerly Twitter), Kangana mocked the image, saying, "Ha ha ha, she is the same dadi who featured in Time magazine for being the most powerful Indian… And she is available for 100 rupees. Pakistani jurno’s have hijacked international PR for India in an embarrassing way. We need our own people to speak for us internationally."

Kaur, who comes from a farming family and actively joined the farmers’ agitation at Delhi’s borders, says she has zero links to the Shaheen Bagh protests or the Time magazine feature. She argues that Kangana’s comments not only damaged her reputation among fellow protesters but also caused her deep emotional pain and public humiliation. "These false claims hurt my pride and honor," Kaur stated in her complaint.

Kangana fought back by approaching the Punjab and Haryana High Court, arguing that the Bathinda magistrate misused Section 202 of the CrPC, which deals with inquiries before issuing summons in defamation cases. But Justice Tribhuvan Singh Dahiya dismissed her petition after a detailed hearing, finding no grounds to interfere.

Now, Kangana has filed a special leave petition (SLP) in the Supreme Court. According to the court’s causelist, a bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta will hear the matter on September 12. As the Supreme Court hearing approaches, all eyes are on how this high-profile defamation case unfolds, especially with Kangana’s shift from films to politics adding extra buzz.

This isn’t the first time Kangana’s bold social media posts have landed her in legal hot water. The case highlights the growing scrutiny on public figures and their online statements amid sensitive issues like the farmers’ protests and women’s rights.
