The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) arrested two Indian women at Chennai International Airport on 13 November after a targeted bust that seized over 28 kg of high‑grade Hydroponic Ganja. The drug, worth about ₹10 crore, was hidden in their check‑in luggage and was found to have come from Phuket, Thailand.
NCB officials say the women were flagged because of unusual travel patterns and suspicious luggage. When the suitcases were opened, police discovered 28.080 kg of premium marijuana packed tightly to avoid detection. The drug was placed inside the two check‑in bags that the arrested passengers carried.
Investigators trace the theft of the Ganja to handlers in Phuket who handed the sealed bags over to the women at the airport, instructing them to deliver them in Chennai. The NCB has begun a fresh probe to map this group’s links back to suppliers in Thailand and forward to distributors in India.
One of the women works in real estate and may have been drawn in by promises of high profits. The other, a former housemaid in Dubai now living in Chennai, occasionally takes small roles in Tamil cinema. Early findings hint that the seized weed was meant for distribution in Chennai and possibly to contacts in the Kollywood film industry.
Both women were taken into custody under the Narcotics (Suppression of Prohibition on Drugs) Act (NDPS) of 1985. The NCB is working to dismantle the entire syndicate, tracing financiers, suppliers and intended recipients.
