On Thursday, the first day of the two‑day Vibrant Gujarat Regional Conference (VGRC) at Ganpat University in Mehsana, Gujarat, a high‑profile CEO Round Table brought together top leaders to discuss how India can hit its 100 GW nuclear‑energy goal. The meeting, aimed at linking regional growth with global investment, focused on boosting Gujarat’s role in the country’s nuclear future.
The round‑table, led by Shuva Raha of the Centre for Energy, Environmental and Water Planning and B.C. Pathak of the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd. (NPCIL), examined how the government and private companies can join forces to expand nuclear capacity. Participants debated how to meet Gujarat’s 18 GW target by 2047, which includes the 4,200 MW plant planned for Khushalpur, and how to speed up projects using new tech like Small Modular Reactors (SMRs).
Regulatory bar‑riers were a key topic. Leaders argued that changes to the Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage Act could make it easier for private firms to invest. The room also praised India’s indigenous success with the 700 MW PHWR Unit KAPS‑3, calling for a stronger push on local technology.
The session drew a mix of government officials, industry CEOs, and research experts. Hints of international cooperation were revealed with a visit from Dr. Alex Volgin of Russia’s Ros‑Atom, while the likes of Ajit Kumar Mohanty (DAE), Sr. Executive VP Anil V Parab (L&T), and NE President Pos. Neeraj Agrawal (JSW) shared insights on funding, technology deployment and policy adaptation.
Gujarat’s leaders celebrated the conference as a signal that the state could become a key hub for meeting national energy targets, not only in renewables but also in nuclear power. By aligning private capital with national goals, the state could accelerate its push toward clean, reliable nuclear energy, strengthening India’s total energy mix and its workforce in nuclear technology.
The CEO Round Table confirms the state’s commitment to a sustainable energy future and provides a clear roadmap for how the private sector can partner with government to reach India’s nuclear milestones.
