The Uttar Pradesh Mati Kala Board has recorded record‑breaking pottery sales, raking in more than ₹4.20 crore this fiscal year. That’s a 27.7 percent jump from last year, even though the board ran fewer stalls.
The hike comes after a string of state‑level, regional and district fairs that showcased Uttar Pradesh’s traditional clay work. In Lucknow’s Khadi Bhavan, a 10‑day Mahotsav from October 10‑19 drew 56 stalls and generated ₹1.22 crore in sales. Seven regional fairs in Gorakhpur, Agra, Kanpur Dehat and Moradabad, ran from October 13‑19 with 126 stalls, bringing in ₹78.84 lakh.
The biggest boost, however, came from 3‑day district fairs that covered all 70 districts. These fairs, held from October 17‑19, sold ₹2.19 crore from 509 stalls and helped the board reach the ₹3.29 crore target for FY 24‑25.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s push to lift local artisans has played a key role. Under his vision, the state government has focused on marketing, branding and training to open the pottery sector to national and international buyers. The board’s new initiatives—like training artisans and improving product quality—have made the fairs run smoother and connection with buyers stronger.
“The higher turnover, even with fewer stalls, shows growing interest in traditional pottery,” the board said. “Artisans now feel more confident and are enjoying better market links.”
The board’s long‑term plan includes more advanced design training, exhibition management and a branding push to keep crafts profitable. It also supports the Prajapati community by allowing free clay extraction from village ponds, cutting raw‑material costs and keeping production steady.
Overall, more than 2,600 stalls across the state sold ₹4.20 crore worth of pottery this year, helping thousands of families stabilize income and giving Uttar Pradesh’s heritage ceramics a contemporary edge.
