Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel marked four years in office on September 13, and one standout success story is the huge progress in maternal and child health. His government’s push has made a real difference for mothers and babies across the state.
Take the Namo Shree Yojana, for example. Launched in February 2024, this scheme has quickly become a game-changer for women’s social security in Gujarat. In just 18 months, it has delivered financial help worth Rs 354 crore to over 6.21 lakh mothers. Even better, nearly 11 lakh women have signed up as beneficiaries.
Here’s how it works: Eligible women get up to Rs 12,000 in stages during their first two pregnancies. The scheme teams up with national programs like the Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY) and Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY). This combo ensures moms get proper nutrition and safe hospital deliveries.
Everything runs smoothly through Gujarat’s TeCHO+ portal. They verify documents digitally and send money straight to bank accounts via Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT). No hassle, no delays—it’s all transparent and efficient.
Health experts say this program has played a big role in boosting maternal health in Gujarat. The state’s Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR) has dropped an impressive 54.5% over the last decade. Back in 2013, it was 112 deaths per 100,000 live births; now, in 2023, it’s down to just 51. That’s way better than the national average of 88.
Thanks to this, Gujarat has already hit the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) target of bringing MMR below 70 by 2030—seven years ahead of schedule!
The Namo Shree Yojana isn’t alone. Gujarat has rolled out other key initiatives like SUMAN, PMSMA, Mamta, and Khilkhilat to tackle pregnancy risks, provide nutrition, and offer top-notch care for moms and kids.
From cash support to better healthcare access, the Namo Shree Yojana is transforming lives and highlighting Chief Minister Patel’s commitment to women’s empowerment and growth for everyone in Gujarat.
