Foreign Secretary Misri, EU delegation laud political engagements, cooperation across various sectors

India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri recently wrapped up key talks with the European Union’s Political and Security Committee (PSC) in New Delhi. This meeting highlights the growing India-EU partnership, especially in security and defence areas.

The PSC team, made up of 30 members from EU countries, made history with their first-ever visit to Asia. Led by Chair Delphine Pronk, the group included ambassadors from EU member states, plus officials from the European Commission and the European External Action Service. They arrived for a two-day working trip to strengthen ties.

Both sides shared excitement about the rising high-level political meetings and steady sectoral talks between India and the EU. The discussions zeroed in on boosting cooperation in security, defence, and beyond. They reaffirmed their push for a quick wrap-up of the India-EU Security and Defence Partnership and the Security of Information Agreement, according to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).

Talks also touched on the much-anticipated India-EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA). Leaders have directed negotiators to seal the deal by the end of the year, which could open doors for stronger economic links. The group exchanged views on the latest regional and global issues, keeping both sides aligned on big-picture challenges.

During their visit, PSC members met India’s Defence Secretary and got an in-depth briefing on the Information Fusion Centre – Indian Ocean Region (IFC-IOR). They also chatted with reps from India’s defence industry, exploring ways to team up on manufacturing and innovation.

This visit rides the wave of momentum from the EU College of Commissioners’ landmark trip to India in February 2025. It underscores the shared goal of deepening the India-EU Strategic Partnership. India and the EU already enjoy regular dialogues on security and defence topics like maritime security, cyber threats, and counter-terrorism. They’re now eyeing more collaboration in defence industry growth.

Misri had support from top officials, including Deputy National Security Adviser Pavan Kapoor, Secretary (West) Sibi George, and others, during the meeting. These steps show India’s active role in global security talks and its strong EU bonds.
