Chennai Customs has shut down several smuggling plots at the city’s international airport over the past week, seizing drugs, gold and cash worth more than ₹100 lakh.
According to a statement from the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU), the team used precise passenger screening and targeted intelligence to catch smugglers before they could board.
The operation captured more than 9 kg of cannabis (ganja), 594 g of 24‑karat gold, and ₹51.4 lakh in Indian and foreign currency – all valued at roughly ₹52 lakh.
Two separate incidents involved graphic travelers from Bangkok. On Wednesday, 7.473 kg of ganja was found on a passenger arriving with Thai Airways. A day earlier, 1.9 kg of the drug was seized from another traveler, leading to the arrest of the passenger and a receiver waiting outside the airport.
Other highlights include a 594‑gram gold seizure on Oct 6 from a passenger from Abu Dhabi, and a cash haul of ₹51.4 lakh from a traveler bound for Singapore on Oct 4.
“These interceptions reinforce Chennai Customs’ role in keeping our borders safe against trans‑national crime,” the statement added.
In related news, the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) handed down a 15‑year jail term to drug trafficker Samir Jamilbhai Sheikh in Gujarat. The court convicted Sheikh under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985 for trafficking methamphetamine and mephedrone. In 2022, the NCB seized 143 g of these drugs from Sheikh’s car in Ahmedabad.
These moves demonstrate India’s ongoing effort to clamp down on drug and gold smuggling, and to hold offenders accountable through the NCB and NDPS courts.
