Vande Mataram will inspire patriotism in future generations: Tripura CM Manik Saha

In Tripura, celebrations kicked off this year to mark the 150 th anniversary of Vande Mataram, the iconic patriotic song that helped ignite India’s freedom movement.
Chief Minister Manik Saha spoke at the opening ceremony in Agartala, urging that the song keep inspiring patriotism in future generations.

A historic milestone

  • Vande Mataram was written by literary giant Bankim Chandra Chatterjee in 1875, first published in his novel Anandamath.
  • The song caught the attention of nationalists and was sung during the 1896 Indian National Congress session in Kolkata, famously performed by Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore.
  • In 1905, it became a rallying cry against the Partition of Bengal, and by 1907 the words “Vande Mataram” were even carved on the tricolor flag during hoisting ceremonies.
  • During the 1943 Azad Hind government’s declaration, the song was again used as a symbol of Indian independence.
  • In 1950, President Dr. Rajendra Prasad declared that Vande Mataram should receive equal respect to the national anthem, recognizing its role in India’s liberation struggle.

Year‑long celebration plan

The Union Cabinet approved the anniversary celebrations on October 1, 2025, and the state will observe the event for a full year, divided into four phases from November 7, 2025 to November 7, 2026.
Key activities include:

  • Across Tripura: district headquarters, subdivisions, and local bodies will host events, echoing the national sentiment.
  • Educational outreach: schools and colleges will run programs to teach students the song’s history and meaning.
  • Community programs: in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s initiatives—Har Ghar Tiranga, Swachh Bharat, and Ek Peer Maa Ke Naam—the celebrations aim to boost national pride and unity.

Leadership and support

Chief Secretary Jitendra Kumar Sinha, Information and Cultural Affairs Secretary Pradeep Kumar Chakraborty, and other officials attended the launch ceremony, signifying strong government backing for the cultural observances.

As Tripura’s leaders rally behind Vande Mataram, the 150 th anniversary is set to energize citizens, remind them of India’s rich struggle for freedom, and kindle a renewed sense of patriotism.
