Sanju Samson Ready to Bat Anywhere for India in Asia Cup
As India gears up for their blockbuster Asia Cup match against Pakistan on September 14, batting coach Sitanshu Kotak has given a big thumbs-up to wicketkeeper-batsman Sanju Samson. Kotak says Samson is super versatile and can slot in at any batting position for the team.
With Shubman Gill now joining the squad, things get tricky for Samson’s spot. In India’s opening Asia Cup game against the UAE, Gill opened alongside Abhishek Sharma. Samson had been opening with Sharma before, so this shift leaves his position up in the air.
"I think Sanju is a good enough player to bat at any number. It will depend on what the team needs. The captain and head coach will decide. He’s more than happy to bat wherever," Kotak told reporters in Dubai.
Kotak also shared his thoughts on the high-stakes India vs Pakistan clash. He emphasized that the players are laser-focused on cricket and nothing else. "We’re here to play. The players are focused on playing cricket, and I don’t think they have anything in mind other than that. It will be a competitive game. The India-Pakistan game is always a competitive game. So, we would rather focus on that," he added.
India kicked off the T20 Asia Cup on a high note, thrashing the UAE by nine wickets on Wednesday. Next up, they face Pakistan on September 14, followed by their final group stage match against Oman on September 19 in Abu Dhabi.
The tournament heats up after the group stage with the Super 4 round, where the top two teams from each group advance. If India tops Group A, all their Super 4 games will happen in Dubai. But if they finish second, one match shifts to Abu Dhabi, with the other two in Dubai. The Super 4 stage runs from September 20 to 26.
The grand finale takes place in Dubai on September 28. Fans can’t wait for more action in this thrilling Asia Cup edition!
