Tripura’s tourism sector is getting a big boost, thanks to promises from top Indian leaders. State Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury shared exciting updates after meetings in New Delhi with Union DoNER Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia and Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. Both assured full support to build better tourism infrastructure in the northeastern state.
Chowdhury pushed for funding to grow Tripura tourism during his chat with Scindia. “The DoNER Minister promised all possible help to strengthen our tourism efforts,” he posted on Facebook. The minister laid out current projects and future plans from Tripura’s Tourism Department. He also asked for DoNER Ministry backing on new tourism projects, and Scindia committed to cooperating fully.
Tourism Secretary Uttam Kumar Chakma and Director Prashant Badal Negi joined the meeting. In a separate session, Chowdhury updated Sitharaman on the department’s work and sought her help for fresh initiatives. She too pledged strong cooperation to advance Tripura tourism development. The same officials attended that discussion.
This comes right after a major milestone for spiritual tourism in Tripura. On September 22, Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled the revamped Mata Tripura Sundari Temple—one of India’s 51 revered Shakti Peethas—in Udaipur, southern Tripura. Locals had waited years for this upgrade.
A Tourism Department official explained that the 524-year-old temple got a makeover under the central government’s PRASHAD scheme, which focuses on pilgrimage sites and spiritual heritage. The project cost over Rs 54 crore, with the central government chipping in Rs 34.43 crore and Tripura adding Rs 17.61 crore.
The temple dates back to 1501, when King Maharaja Dhanya Manikya built it. It’s the third Shakti Peetha in eastern India, following Kolkata’s Kalighat Kali Temple and Guwahati’s Kamakhya Temple. This redevelopment could draw more visitors to Tripura’s rich cultural sites and boost the local economy.
